Walking to school – Discovering the way

Our Kindergarten year is coming to an end and the pre-school children will soon be first graders. The first day of school is undoubtedly a key rite of passage, for which we have been preparing the children throughout the past year. However, something that is just as important as the preparation for the new stage in their lives, is the learning and knowing the daily route to and from school. Walking to school is a healthy activity for children that encourages independence, which we highly encourage. As it is important to ensure that the children are safe on our roads, who better to support us with teaching responsible road safety, than the local police. In a child-friendly manner, a nice police officer explained the importance of staying alert while walking to school and why we should choose routes that provide space to walk and have the least amount of traffic. They discussed the different traffic signs and what certain signals mean and as learning should be fun and interactive and practice makes perfect, the children could put into practice what they have learned. Stop at the curb. Look left and right for oncoming vehicles. When the intersection is clear, start crossing and keep looking for approaching vehicles. Look, listen and be seen!
Our preschool children have mastered the training very well and look forward to their first day of school.
